In celebration of Israel Independence Day (April 16, 2013) I describe some of the important, if lesser known characters and events that helped to establish the modern State of Israel. In particular, I pay homage to the English visionaries whose efforts in the 1840’s inspired a later generation of politicians to support the Jewish people returning to the Holy Land.
